Top SEO Trends in 2020
To stay top of your game in SEO, it’s vital to keep your ear to the ground regarding what’s trending. This will change the way we formulate strategies throughout this year and beyond. Here’s what we know, see our list of SEO Trends for 2020 below…
Trend #1 – Artificial intelligence is continuing to evolve
Last October, Google introduced Bidirectional Transformers for Language Understanding (BERT). It deals with the very fundamentals of how people search. For us in the field of SEO, this means we need to be creating engaging, effective, high quality content for users more than ever.
Trend #2 – Topics and semantics > keywords
Google now puts less of a focus on links and keywords; and more on topic layers. In terms of SEO, again quality content is key. As an example, if your business sells greetings cards, try writing educational pieces about things like why we celebrate birthdays, the importance of saying congratulations or lots of different ways to say good luck? Studies have also shown that Google’s crawlers prefer pages with semantic groupings and sites that are designed around topic modelling, so get writing!
SEO Trend #3 – Influencers and SEO are becoming more intertwined
The push back on intrusive ads has led to the rise of social media influencers. Consumers would much prefer to engage with a living, breathing, authentic entity than an advertisement created solely for sales. Collaborating with an influencer can help you build valuable backlinks, which are one of the most important factors that Google uses when evaluating a web page’s ranking.
According to Linqua, “39% of marketers increased their influencer marketing budget in 2018”. When working with an influencer, always choose one that will be relevant to your industry and audience and who will link back to your website and social media. This will increase brand awareness and generate leads and you’ll also boost your search engine rankings.
SEO Trend #4 – Voice search is on the rise
Data from March 2019 shows that 20% of mobile queries are voice searches. As it gets more popular, people search for things in the way they speak. Most of the queries are long tail and specific, which means the users searching are in the consideration stage rather than the awareness stage of the buying process.
SEO Trend #5 – People want digital experiences
44% of companies have moved to a digital-first approach to improve customer experience. This means page load speed and user interface are of vital importance because customer experience affects search ranking. Only users who have a good user experience will spend time on your website.
Creating a robust and flexible long term plan while staying tuned into the ever changing digital trends is vital to come out on top in terms of SEO. Keep our notes in mind and you’ll be well on your way.
