If you’re a small business, and don’t have the marketing budget that you’d like, you can absolutely do search engine optimisation yourself. First things first, you need to understand what it is. SEO is the process of growing the quality and quantity of website traffic by increasing the visibility of a website or a web page to users of a search engine. Here at Rapid, we believe that with the right guidance, yes, you can do SEO by yourself.

Keyword Research

If you are serious about improving your rankings and website traffic, you need to carry out some keyword research. You’ll need to go about finding the most popular words or phrases your target customers use when searching for what you do. For example, for a local restaurant like Boojum or Burrito Bar, key words could be things like Mexican food Belfast or burritos near me Belfast.

Ideally, your keywords will bring you lots of traffic, and not be too competitive. Filter your words down so that you have an effective, succinct list. Once you have a good list of keywords, you can start creating content.

SEO Copywriting

Ensure that your copy is clear and easy to read. A lot of people believe that Google looks at user signals (dwell time, time on page, etc.) to influence rankings. So the more compelling, concise and interesting your content is, the higher your site will rise. Here’s a few tips for writing effective copy.

  • Avoid big words. Always use simple language.
  • Break up your copy. Use italics, bolding, images and paragraphs to break up your content and make it more digestible.
  • Include multimedia, like images, videos, and GIFs to illustrate your points and maintain interest.

On-Site SEO

Throughout your website, you should include internal and external links. In other words, links bringing you to different parts of your site and links bringing you to different parts of the web.

Also, make sure your website is in tip top condition. Ensure that the pages load quickly and there are no technical errors. If there are, say goodbye to your audience. As internet users, we are all extremely impatient. So to stay at the top of the leader boards, we need to be fast.

So in answer to the question, yes. You can do SEO yourself. Time consuming. More success in the search engines = more traffic, and potentially sales. Follow this guide and you’re on the right track.
