We all know why persuasive writing is important for social media marketing. Everyone want high conversion rates. We want our readers to believe our brand is the best brand there is. We want a loyal following. But how? Persuasive writing is everywhere, but the writing process is not as simple as just sharing an opinion. It’s a precise balance of careful research and passionate thought. Writing may not be everyone’s strong suit, so here at Rapid we’ve developed some tips and tricks for how to write persuasively. 

Be Passionate

The readers aren’t stupid, it’s easy to tell when someone is truly passionate about what their writing about. They’ve done their homework and can speak (or write) naturally about it. Having a  strong opinion about your subject will make its defence a bit easier. So get started on researching something that interests you. 

Understand who you’re addressing

To gauge how to pitch your piece of writing, you need to understand who it is you’re addressing. Is your audience old or young, male or female, have kids or not. Get to know your demographic. Use an appropriate tone of voice. 

Discuss both sides

A convincing and persuasive argument will always discuss both sides. Even if you only mention the opposing side to discredit it, you need to show your readers that you understand it. 

Ask rhetorical questions and repeat yourself

This might seem silly, but forcing readers to answer the question themselves is a great persuasive strategy. Repeating yourself and having the readers digest the info more than once is also a top tip for persuasive writing. 

Emphasise

Using techniques such as exaggeration and metaphors can be highly effective when deciding how to write persuasively. Language that evokes emotion and imagery can help you to get a point across. For example, if you’re trying to convince someone of how hot it is outside you could say, ‘it’s absolutely boiling.’ Another example is Disney’s slogan: “The happiest place on Earth.” It’s a subjective statement that makes use of hyperbole to create a desirable feeling for its audience.

Relate to your audience

Readers will be more inclined to like you and to entertain your thought process if they feel you can understand them and have had similar experiences to them. Emotional appeal is important for persuasive writing, as it targets the audience’s sensitivities.

When thinking about how to write persuasively, it’s most important to understand why you have the opinion that you do. After you work this out, the confidence that you radiate will transfer to your audience and your message will be persuasive. Try it!
