When you have a business, creating and owning a website is only the first step. Your website is about getting the most value from each and every visitor. Here at Rapid Agency, web design is the air that we breathe! We have some tips, ideas and tricks for designing a website that works. It must be beautiful, user friendly, fast and simple to navigate. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s start with the basics.

Layout

First and foremost, the layout of your website is of the utmost importance. Have you heard of a visual hierarchy? Put simply, this refers to the size, colour and placement of all the elements of the website. It refers to where your eyes are drawn to first on the site. Of course, you will know to put the most important messages at the top of the page, and in bigger font than the less important ones. Using the concept of a visual hierarchy will guide your viewers around the website in the way you want them to go.

Descriptive and clear headings

As obvious as this sounds, having clear, concise and easy to understand headings is half the battle. Use descriptive, direct words that will allow your audience to navigate the site the way you want them to.

CTAs

Sprinkle your call to actions throughout the webpages like glitter, remembering that persuasion doesn’t happen immediately. As your audience move through the site and become more convinced, call to actions will ensure a response from them.

Cut the clutter

Having a clean, modern looking page can be so appealing to your audience and potential customers. Think about Apple’s website! Cut the clutter and keep the confusion to a minimum. Address one aspect of your business at a time, and don’t worry about having a tall page. As humans in 2021, we know all about scrolling, it’s second nature to us.

Avoid carousels

As popular as they have been in the past, it’s time to move on. Think about it rationally, visitors might only see the first image on the slide. The messages on the subsequent slides might go unnoticed and calls to actions left to collect dust and disappear. Instead, stack the slides. Have them so that a visitor can scroll down the page to see them.

When you design your website, it’s important to know the basics of designing a website that works and stick to these fool proof rules. Whether you build the site yourself or come to us for help, you’ll want to have this basic understanding.
